It's week two of the Riley Blake Designs Block of the Week Challenge. Each week they are highlighting a traditional block and challenging everyone to make one. This week we are focusing on the log cabin block. There are many variations of this block and infinite ways you can arrange the blocks and colors within the blocks to make quilts that look completely different! It's such a versatile block. Traditional log cabin blocks have light colors on one side and darker colors on the other surrounding a center square. The color of the center square has meaning like yellow for "visitor's welcome" and red for the "home hearth." Below I included directions for making one version of a log cabin block in 12.5"x12.5" and 6.5"x6.5" finished sizes. Click on the pictures below to download the pattern for free. Remember to tag #RBDblockchallenge and @citrusandmintdesigns so I can see what you make!
*Fabric used is Under the Canopy and Blossom available through Riley Blake Designs

I'm so sorry that you are in the hospital! I'm happy to hear you are going home soon to sew! Sewing is a happy place to be. I had such a hard time choosing fabric too--that's why I ended up sewing two versions

Hi Sharon, I'm sorry but I don't know. I would google "queen size log cabin quilt pattern" and I'm sure you'll find a pattern that tells you an amount.

It's a quick and easy one! The 6.5" block could easily be done in scraps from other projects if you have that lying around.

I wanted to print a copy of the pattern so I could have it in front of me as I cut and sew the strips. Your website would not let me do so. I understand the argument against copying all your hard work, but keeping a computer program open the whole time is not a viable solution either. Suggestions?

That's strange. When you click on the picture it should open it up in a new window and then you can right click on it and save or print the image. If that doesn't work, email me at [email protected] and I'll email you the files.

I had the same trouble. What I did was right click on the bigger picture of the first block and clicked "open in new tab". Once I opened that tab I right clicked and it gave me the option to print. Did the same with the other block. Hope this helps.

Yes it is printable. Click on the picture and it should open in a different window. Then right click and select print. If you have trouble doing that, email me at [email protected] and I'll send it to you.

Hi! Thank you for the log cabin block. I am just now finding out about this amazing sew along. I see you've generously offered to email files to people. I was wondering if you could put a link to the PDF files on your page? The printed .jpg files are small print and hard to read.

New quilter question...do I add the 1/4” seam allowance when I’m cutting the block pieces or is that already figured into the measurements given? Thank you!

You don't need to add it, I've already done the math for you :) Most quilt patterns are written with the 1/4th seam allowance in the cutting measurements.

I am not able to get cut pieces to match up in the 6.5” block. If I sew together A and B, then try to add C…

The instructions are on the image below the 6.5”x6.5” block. It’s titled as a 12.5”x12.5” block (unfinished, finished would be 12”x12”)
